Types of Tea

Tea comes in six types, all from the same plant (camellia sinensis), the difference is in the origin and style and degree of processing.

They are:-

  1. black tea, the most common tea with over 160 million cups consumed every day
  2. green tea which carries significant health benefits
  3. yellow tea slightly green but differently processed
  4. white tea made from the very young tips of the tea plant
  5. Puerh, a precious post-fermented green tea which can cost up to $10,000 for just 100g
  6. Oolong made famous by celebrities including Oprah Winfrey.

Wuyi Cliff tea originated in the Wuyi Mountain region of Fujian. Wuyi Cliff Oolong has long, curly leaves resembling iron shards. The leaves are hand-rolled into the traditional twisted Yan Cha form and pan-fired at their aromatic peak to arrest oxidation. Afterwards they are charcoal-fired in small batches to produce the deep green color and rich flavor that have made this tea one of China’s “Ten Most Famous”. The aroma of the dry leaf is deliciously sweet while the dark amber infusion is soft, smooth and malty.

The restorative and medical properties associated with Pu-erh tea is truly astonishing. Often referred to as the “Wonder Tonic” and the “Medicinal Tea”, Pu-erh tea has been hugely popular in China for over 1700 years. For centuries it was given as a tribute to the Emperor and high ranking officials within the Imperial Courts of China. Its high value and many health benefits lead to high demands and the frequency of the tributes gave it the title “Tribute Tea”.

Accounts on the health benefits and medical use of Pu-erh tea has been documented in various ancient scripts and famous books throughout Chinese history. Pu-erh tea is strongly believed to have wide ranging health benefits from anti aging, prevention of heart disease and cancer, diabetic control, removal of toxins to curing dysentery, inflammation, aiding digestion and weight loss, improving the eyesight, blood circulation and reviving those who are overly intoxicated with alcohol.
